BAR AL HICKMAN Experience the quiet beauty of Oman’s Indian Ocean coast with a trip to Khalouf and Bar al Hickmann
A five hour drive south of Muscat leads to the white sand beaches of Bar al Hickman. A 50km squared salt plane of dramatic lunar landscape must be crossed in order to reach the turquoise waters of the Indian ocean.Travelling over the vast, empty salt flats where the horizon and sky flirt to become one is a truly unique and other-worldly experience. Once you reach the coast, you’ll be greeted by the warm, crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Here, you can swim in the shallow waters of the lagoons and watch the resident flamingos and many other migrant and resident birds. Spend the morning beach-combing along miles of white sand, relax back with a book and refreshing drink in the majlis before feasting on a freshly prepared seafood barbecue in the evening.
We head out of Muscat after breakfast, passing by the village of Fanjah for a photoshop after which we continue to Sinaw. The small market town of Sinaw is well worth a visit. This is where the Bedouins come to do business and the souq can be a thriving and fascinating affair with all the hustle and bustle of a Middle Eastern market at its finest. Sinaw souq is amongst one of the oldest preserved souqs in Oman and one of the few places you can find traditional silver Bedouin jewellery.

We will have a tasty picnic lunch enroute.

We continue south until we reach the coastal fishing village of Filim, a great place to spot a variety of birds including flamingos. By late afternoon, we pass by Muhut and cross a 40km salt flat before reaching our camp in Bar Al Hickman, set on a white sand beach near a lagoon, where we often see flamingos as well, and the Indian Ocean. It is a large salt pan that is home to a vast community of sea birds as well as a host of migratory birds.

Whilst we are happy to organise two-night trips from Muscat to the Barr Al Hickman, this area is a fair drive from Muscat and we would therefore suggest to combine it with a stay in the Wahiba Sands and, if time permits, as few nights in the mountains.
